The Art of The Hobbit

Filed under : BOOKS CONCERNING TOLKIEN > Art / Pictures

Art of the Hobbit By JRR TolkienA beautiful book containing as complete a collection of Tolkien’s own sketches and illustrations for ‘The Hobbit’ as you’re ever likely to get. I was lucky enough to have already seen quite a few of Tolkien’s own remarkable pictures at an National Book League exhibition in 1977.

Sauron Defeated (1st edition)

Filed under : BOOKS BY TOLKIEN > Middle-earth related > The History of Middle-earth

Tolkien - The History of Middle-earth : Volume 9Volume 9 of the 12-part ‘History of Middle-earth” series. Early writings of J.R.R.Tolkien, edited by Christopher Tolkien. First edition.

I decided to buy another copy of a first edition Sauron Defeated because my original copy has some fading on the dust-jacket spine. From my eBay research it looks as though a lot of these have faded spines. Must be something to do with the colour I guess.

But this copy is really very nice indeed.

I have a confession.
I bought this cheap in a second-hand bookshop and I don’t think I’ve opened it since.

The Lord of the Rings : A Reader’s Companion

Filed under : BOOKS CONCERNING TOLKIEN > Literary Studies

Tolkien books and collectibles - Lord of the Rings Literary StudiesA superb in depth companion to The Lord of the Rings - I think this was originally intended to be published as an ‘annotated’ Lord of the Rings with all the entries as footnotes to the published text, but it ended up as a stand alone book. And a very fine one at that.
