The Hobbit : An Unexpected Journey (Extended Edition) DVD

Filed under : TOLKIEN Miscellanea > DVDs

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (Extended Edition DVD)The Extended Edition 5-DVD boxed set of the first part of Peter Jackson’s Hobbit trilogy of movies.

New material includes a couple of new songs (Bofur in Rivendell, Goblin King) and several little extra bits of exposition including some more background explanation behind the enmity between the Dwarves of Erebor and the Elvenking Thranduil. If you liked the theatrical release you will love this. If you didn’t - well, there’s more here not to like.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (DVD)

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (DVD)The DVD of the first part of Peter Jackson’s Hobbit trilogy of movies.

There are plenty of reviews around so I won’t go into too much detail here. Tolkien purists may find some of Peter Jackson’s changes/additions unnecessary, while fans of his earlier Lord of the Rings movies will lap this up as it is very much in keeping with the previous films.

Filed under : BOOKS BY TOLKIEN > Middle-earth related > The Hobbit

Tolkien's The Hobbit Illustrated by Jemima CatlinThis brand new (2013) edition of the Hobbit is beautifully illustrated by Jemima Catlin, and I’d say is set to become the ‘definitive’ edition for a whole new generation of readers.

The Fall of Arthur

Filed under : BOOKS BY TOLKIEN > Other Works > The Fall of Arthur

The Fall of ArthurAn unfinished and previously unknown poem by Tolkien accompanied by extensive commentary by Christopher Tolkien. Of interest to Middle-earth fans for the mysterious hints at possible intended links between King Arthur’s world and that of the Silmarillion. Written in alliterative verse, and sounding very much like the poetry of Rohan in The Lord of the Rings.

The Wisdom of the Shire

Filed under : BOOKS CONCERNING TOLKIEN > Self-help

The Wisdom of the Shire‘Wisdom of the Shire’ is a ‘self-help’ book that highlights all sorts of connections between Tolkien’s sub-created world of Middle-earth and our own. In particular it uses examples from Tolkien’s writing to show how much we can learn from the hobbits - their bravery, loyalty, sense of fun, and an appreciation of the simple things in life.

Children’s Treasury of Literature

The Children's Treasury of Literature In ColourThis collection of children’s stories includes the first chapter of The Hobbit - ‘An Unexpected Party’ illustrated by Robert J. Lee.

Tolkien himself famously described these illustrations as “vulgar, stupid and entirely out of keeping with the text”.

Very much a product of the times, the illustrations are indeed playful and a bit psychedelic. But personally I rather like Robert J. Lee’s pictures - and the fact that they have Dwalin the dwarf with an actual blue beard.

The Hobbit Official Movie Guide

Filed under : BOOKS CONCERNING TOLKIEN > Movie related

The Hobbit Movie GuideAnother great movie guide by Brian Sibley and right up there with his Lord of the Rings movie books.

I searched (briefly) to see if this book was available as a Limited Edition Collector’s Hardback, like the ‘Rings’ guides, but couldn’t seem to find any mention of a hardback version anywhere.
